Where official readings diverge

Questions on which more than one official body has taken a position, and the positions differ. Each is given in its holder’s own words, dated, with the lifecycle stage of what it rests on and a link to the instrument. This site does not adjudicate between them — a draft is shown as a draft, a statute as a statute, and the reader weighs them.

What is the UK travel-rule threshold a firm must apply today — £800, or €1,000?

€1,000 and £800 are not the same sum, so the two answers catch different transfers. A firm applying the guidance figure applies the wrong test in one direction or the other, and the guidance's conversion step computes in a currency the statute no longer uses.

HM Treasury

stated 2026-06-09 · in force since 30 June 2026

S.I. 2026/621, regs 32 and 33, substituted £800 for “1,000 euros” in regs 64C(4) and 64G(1)(b) of the Money Laundering Regulations 2017. The instrument was made on 9 June 2026 and came into force 21 days later, on 30 June 2026.

Joint Money Laundering Steering Group (JMLSG)

stated 2026-08-24 · HM Treasury-approved industry guidance; the sponsor's own notice records the update as in progress

The Guidance Part II offered for download on 24 August 2026 is the June 2023 text as updated December 2025; its Sector 22 travel-rule annex states the threshold as €1,000 at paragraphs 13 and 45 and directs firms to convert transaction values into euros. JMLSG's own current-guidance page carries the notice that the Guidance “is currently being updated to reflect amendments per The Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (Amendment) Regulations 2026 (SI 2026/621) that came into force on 30 June 2026”.

the source ↗

JMLSG has stated on its own current-guidance page that the text is being updated to reflect SI 2026/621. The divergence is therefore expected to close at JMLSG's end; until the revised Part II issues, the two published figures differ. Approved guidance carries evidential weight under the MLRs, but the regulations are the instrument.
